In Vitro Fertilization is probably the best known and most widely used ART procedure. For well over a decade, IVF has allowed infertile couples the chance to conceive and bear children. The best candidates for IVF are women with damaged fallopian tubes.

IVF is a four-stage procedure. This process begins with ovarian stimulation to encourage the ovaries to produce a large number of mature eggs, which can then be removed from the follicles, and monitoring and retrieval of eggs. Several eggs are collected from the woman’s ovary and put in a special culture medium for about 2 to 3 hours. Semen from the male partner or donor is then processed using various techniques in order to get an active motile sperm. After this, the prepared sperm is transferred into the medium containing the eggs.

In Vitro Fertilization with Embryo Transfer (IVF – ET)

In the fourth stage of IVF, a lot of these eggs will fertilize and form embryos, which are then implanted into the woman’s womb via a simple procedure that does not require anesthesia. Most times, egg retrieval is preceded by ovarian stimulation, during which the woman takes hormonal medications every day in order to promote the growth of many eggs. However, IVF can be carried out without the use of ovulation medications in some cases.

A full IVF cycle takes around 3 weeks to complete. However, these steps can be broken down into several parts based on individual cases, so the process might take a longer time.
