The IVF laboratory’s quality is one of the most important things to consider when selecting a fertility clinic. Whether your chosen clinic carries out the medical procedures themselves at an in-house IVF lab or outsources them to another laboratory, they should be able to provide you with the details of the laboratory’s operation.
Clearly, knowing what to look for and the right questions to ask about the IVF lab can help ensure you get the best fertility treatment possible.
Coastal Fertility Medical Center, California is a top IVF care facility in the industry, thanks to our well-equipped, state-of-the-art laboratory and highly experienced embryologists. Let’s look at how you can find the perfect IVF lab for yourself.
The IVF process timeline spans a few weeks.
After the patient has taken the necessary fertility medications and undergone the egg retrieval procedure, the focus of the treatment cycle shifts to the clinic’s laboratory.
This is where the “actual IVF” procedures take place.
It is where fertilization occurs, where embryos are nurtured prior to transfer, and where complex medical procedures, such as genetic testing, assisted hatching, and ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) are done.
Hence, the success of a treatment cycle depends significantly on the quality of the laboratory and the equipments being used. A complete-service lab will be able to retrieve and store your sperm, eggs, or embryos.
The above discussion raises a necessary question. What makes an IVF lab stand out?
There are many things that differentiate an exceptional laboratory from an average one. When choosing a fertility clinic for your IVF, ask and consider the following factors about the lab.
The fertility experts and technicians who will be handling your eggs, sperm, or embryos should have years of valuable experience as the clinical specialist carrying out the treatment.
Assisted reproductive technologies (ART for short) are technically complex procedures that require a high level of expertise from everyone involved.
At Coastal Fertility, we have a full-time lab director who oversees the IVF procedures from start to finish.
As you can see, it’s important to ask the clinic whether experts are trained and board-certified. Also find out
The method used for embryo incubation and storage has a big impact on how the embryos will develop.
An ideal IVF laboratory must have strict protocols that govern everything that takes place there. Here are some of the questions you need to ask if you are looking to undergo IVF at a fertility clinic in Irvine, California.
An IVF lab can only be as good as the equipment present as embryology involves the use of highly sophisticated biomedical tools.
A well-equipped laboratory will have various types of powerful microscopes, embryo incubators, and microtools for IVF. Besides, an embryo needs environmental controls at every stage of development to grow appropriately.
To know about these things, ask the fertility clinic:
The laboratory’s air quality has a huge impact on the viability and health of developing embryos. Contaminants can cause severe harm, and air impurities such as VOC (volatile organic compounds), microbes, or perfume can interfere with the development of an embryo.
Growing embryos are highly sensitive to changes in ambient light and temperature and these two factors are essential for your IVF success.
Enquire if the laboratory has any measures in place to control the embryos’ environment during incubation and handling.
Finding the right IVF laboratory can significantly raise your odds of having a successful fertility treatment. Hence, do not hesitate to discuss and ask questions about the laboratory.
We know that it’s not easy to evaluate the quality of an IVF lab for someone who does not have a medical background or knowledge. The highly sophisticated science and techniques used can be hard to understand.
But remember that you don’t need to be well-versed in assisted reproductive technology before you can tell whether or not an IVF laboratory is ideal for your fertility treatment.
IVF is a huge financial and time commitment, and at Coastal Fertility Medical Center, we believe that every patient deserves the best care possible at each stage of treatment.

Following the Preimplantation Genetic Screening process, which helps ensure there are normal chromosome numbers and detects possible genetic disorders, the most healthy embryo(s) are selected to be implanted into your or your chosen surrogate’s womb. 2 weeks after the transfer of the embryo, your physician will conduct a final blood test to determine the level of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your body. Increased hCG levels usually indicate a positive pregnancy test.
For fertilization to take place, the collected egg and sperm are combined in a petri dish and cultured in an embryo incubator. This dish is closely watched to check whether any of the eggs have been fertilized. Once the egg is fertilized, it is referred to as an embryo or a blastocyst on the 5th day of development. Our in-house embryologist carefully nurtures every embryo to the right time, even if it means working outside the standard business operating hours. For instance: If an oocyte is not mature, our laboratory will wait for it to mature and then ICSI it at the right time.
The egg retrieval is a slightly invasive medical procedure that takes about 20 to 30 minutes. You will be given an anesthetic to make you sleep for the duration of the procedure. Using ultrasound technology, your doctor will harvest your eggs transvaginally with a small, hollow needle connected to an ultrasound probe. Once your eggs are collected, your partner’s semen or donor sperm you have pre-selected is used for fertilization. The sperm are washed and prepared, and the top-quality sperm extracted is used to fertilize the eggs.
Your doctor will create a customized medication schedule that contains information about the fertility medications and hormone injections you have to take. Medication and injections are taken to encourage your ovaries to mature a large number of eggs for fertilization. Since women don’t respond to fertility drugs and hormones the same way, personalized protocols are crucial to the IVF cycle success. At Coastal Fertility, we will monitor you closely, letting you understand the changes occurring in your body and keeping track of how your egg follicles are growing.
On-site consultations typicallyinclude a standard fertility evaluation, consisting of a physical examination, complementary follicular ultrasound, and testing to enable your doctor to know your present fertility status and draw up a treatment plan.
This consultation includes a detailed medical evaluation with a doctor. You and your physician will review your health records and have enough time to talk about your goals and get answers to your questions. We recommend that you jot down all your questions before the visit to allow you to make the best use of the time spent with your doctor.
Your Reproductive Endocrinologist will take all factors into consideration and create a comprehensive plan of care, otherwise known as the treatment plan. This plan will include treatment recommendations from the physician and enable your financial coordinator to make a precise quotation once you meet.
